Buying new furniture for your home can be a bit of an investment. It’s also a big decision, especially if you want something nice that will last a while. If you plan to keep it for a while you want something you really like, something that matches the look and the rest of the decor in your home.

Finding The Right Furniture
While there are a lot of options of finished furniture, between local stores and online furniture stores, it can still be difficult to find exactly what you want. You may find the style of furniture you like but it may not in the type of wood you want. Or it may not be the color or type of finish you want or need to match the rest of your already painted and decorated home. You may be envisioning something very specific but not able to find it when looking at finished furniture.

One option is custom-made furniture, but it can be very expensive to have it custom-made in order to have exactly what you want. Luckily there is a less expensive way to get just the furniture you want, or at least something that is very close to what you are seeking.

Buying Unfinished Furniture
Buying unfinished furniture can give you incredible versatility. You can look for the styles you want in the type of wood you want then you can finish them to get the look you want. And finishing furniture isn’t as difficult as you may think. If you like home projects you can learn how to stain or paint the items you have chosen.

The Finishing Touch
There are a variety of how to guides available, and the company where you bought the pieces may have specific instructions. Many of these companies also sell a range of stains, paints and/or paint finishes that give that antiqued look, or other distinct looks you may be trying to achieve.

If you don’t feel comfortable doing the job yourself, or are nervous you may not get the results you want, you can hire a professional or experienced friend to do the job for you. Even if you hire someone to finish the pieces for you it will probably be much more cost effective for you to buy unfinished furniture than to have custom pieces designed and finished.

It may end up costing a little more than what you would pay for pieces at a discount furniture store, but if you are specific about what you want it will be well worth it. After all this is something you will likely own for a long time and see every day. You want it to be something you really like.
